FAQs

  • What is Education Therapy?
Educational Therapy offers a holistic approach that addresses both academic and emotional well-being, helping individuals reach their full potential. Sessions focus on developing foundational academic skills, strengthening processing skills, and improving compensatory skills in and out of the classroom for lifelong success. Educational therapy specializes in teaching skills and strategies which empower the whole child through personalized plans that are specific to their unique needs and goals. An education therapist also acts as a case manager and school advocate with communication to the entire team of support professionals and parents. Learning Understood is able to do cognitive assessing as well.
  • What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy?
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. In the context of education therapy, CBT helps children and adolescents manage symptoms of anxiety, ADHD, and other emotional challenges by teaching them practical strategies to cope with stress, regulate emotions, and improve problem-solving skills. Techniques used in CBT include identifying and challenging irrational or unhelpful thoughts, practicing mindfulness, and developing healthier behavior patterns. This approach not only helps with academic performance but also promotes better social interactions and emotional resilience.
  • How long are the sessions?
Sessions will be at set times and days each week, lasting 50 minutes. For most effective results, twice a week is highly recommended.
  • What does a session look like?
In a one-on-one setting, the goal is to address and remediate the barriers interfering with a learner’s ability to reach their highest level of potential and proficiency. Goals and lessons are based on the learner’s individual needs and assessments. Sessions will incorporate research based multi-sensory intervention, regardless of the goal or area of struggle, to fill in the gaps of learning. Each session will be cumulative as it targets a specific goal based upon the prior session’s work and progress. Once one goal has been reached, we will move forward to another with development of additional strategies and techniques. In short, sessions will focus on developing foundational academic skills, strengthening processing skills, and improving compensatory skills for classroom and lifelong success. For Anxiety and CBT, session goals are still cumulative but also circumstantial as each week may look and feel different based on their experiences, mood, and feelings.
  • Do sessions have to be in-person?
No. Learning Understood will provide sessions in-person in the greater Westfield, IN areas as well as virtually nationwide.
  • How long will the process take?
Our goal is to be put out of a job, but that cannot happen overnight. There is not a timeframe we can suggest because education therapy is a long-term approach ensuring all goals and needs are met. Once we believe your learner is ready to apply taught concepts and strategies independently, we will tell you - and it is usually sooner than they think they are ready. Each learner is unique in their needs, which means no one learner will be on the same path to the finish line. We celebrate the small wins along the way as well as the victory at the end. It’s a marathon process, not a sprint.
  • Is this tutoring?
No. Education therapy trains the brain on strategies and not subject matter tactics. It does not focus on classroom objectives, rather it builds necessary foundational skills of the whole learner to be successful in and out of the classroom.Tutoring is a short-term solution with mastery of a subject as a main goal. Education therapy provides support and intervention for a child’s learning differences or disabilities. Tutoring works to improve grades instead of measuring independence and autonomy in learning as well as developing and understanding of how they learn.
  • Can you bill my insurance?
Unfortunately at this time, insurance does not cover the cost of education therapy. There is no code currently to bill for, but if there is a change in this process, we will let you know as soon as possible.
